PADI Assistant Instructor Course

The new PADI A.I. course was designed to give Divemasters additional teaching, certification and income opportunities. This can be taken as a stand-alone course or as prerequisite to commencing the Open Water Scuba Instructor course (OWSI) - part 2 of the IDC.

In addition to the PADI Dive Master duties the AI course enables you to:

  1. Assist by teaching portions of any PADI Certification diver course under the direct supervision of a PADI instructor.
  2. Teach and certify certain courses like PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy, and Project AWARE Specialty divers under the direction of a PADI Instructor.
  3. Independently conduct Discover SCUBA Diving (pool only).
  4. Attend the PADI Emergency Response Instructor course, and then teach and certify students in EFR.
  5. Teach and certify divers in non-diving specialties like DAN Oxygen Administration, Equipment Specialty, etc.
  6. Attend PADI Specialty Instructor training programs, such as Master Scuba Diver Trainer
  7. Assess Open Water course dive students on their surface skills.

The IDC (AI) curriculum includes the following topics:

  1. Course orientation.
  2. Learning, instruction and the PADI System.
  3. PADI Discover Scuba and snorkelling programs.
  4. Developing knowledge development presentations.
  5. Teaching Project AWARE and Peek Performance Buoyancy Specialties.
  6. Teaching in confined water.
  7. Conducting Open Water Training Presentations.

Prerequisites:

  1. PADI Divemaster or equivalent.
  2. Minimum age 18.
  3. Medical certificate, less than 12 months old, stating you are fit to dive (preferably to Australian Standard 4005.1).
  4. 60 logged dives (including documented experience in night, deep and navigation)
  5. Be certified for at least six months.

How to prepare for the course:

  1. Book early to avoid disappointment, and secure your place with a 10% deposit.
  2. Obtain materials early, and begin self study
  3. Ensure you meet all administrative requirements above
  4. Practice your 800m snorkel
  5. Practice you demonstration of skills from the Open Water Diver Course.
  6. Study the Diving Knowledge Workbook
