The ship sank nearly 100 years
ago during a cyclone in 29 metres of water. Being the only underwater
structure for miles around, she attracts a vast array of wildlife
including WHALES, SHARKS, MANTAS, SNAKES, TURTLES, to name just
a few. Often wildlife found on the Yongala are much larger than
the books state they grow. Fantastic!
| |
Wheeler Reef is rated as one of
the premier dive sites in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
This reef has many shallow areas well suited to snorkelling and
introductory diving, as well as deep bommies and swim throughs
for the experienced diver
| |
While the diving on the Reef itself
is not too technical, Diving on the Yongala wreck most certainly
is. For safe diving Adrenalin
Dive requires divers to have a minimum dive experience
of 6 logged dives, and requires anyone without advanced certification
or 15 logged dives with 5 dives in the past year to complete a
pool assessment and wreck orientation.
Divers with less than 10 logged
dives must complete a deep dive Adventure Dive whilst on board.
As with Yongala trips run by all
operators, wind, tide and wave conditions may prevent diving on
the wreck, and in that case that day’s diving is done on the Great
Barrier Reef.
| |
The M.V. Sea-esta is a 17m (65
foot) Mono Hull with a maximum of 20 divers and a Dive Staff of
2.
She's definitely not the newest
or fastest boat in the dive fleet. That said, she is a reasonably
comfortable boat, and suited to her purpose of providing great
liveaboard dive experiences at reasonable prices.
An assortment
of double, twin, and 4-share cabins. There are ample covered deck
areas to keep you and your gear out of the sun, and a galley capable
of keeping you well fed.
Departure time is
10pm and check in time is 7pm at the Adrenalin
Dive
shop situated at 252 Walker St, Townsville. So please make sure
you have an evening meal prior to check in. Snacks wil be provided
once underway.
| |
*We also caution you, that weather
does cancel this trip, more frequently than any other dive trip
we offer.
If you are making what might be
your only dive trip to the Great Barrier Reef you might consider
taking a liveaboard trip out of Cairns, as dive trips departing
from Cairns have a very low rate of weather-related cancellations
